Nutrition facts of breakfast cereals list percents of vitamins. What are the recommended amounts in mg?

If a cereal says it has 25% daily Iron, for example, how many mg of Iron does the average person need? How much iron does the cereal have?

Hi Rockaholic

The RDA for iron changes quite a bit depending on age and sex. According to a US government fact sheet, for males 19-50, it’s 8mg and, for women the same age, it’s 18mg. Pregnant women, 27mg.

Children often have low iron and so do menstruating women. Men, especially as they age, should be very careful not to take too much iron and probably get enough from what they eat. If they have hemochromatosis, the iron-loading disease, they need to give blood or have it removed by a doctor in order to reduce the overload.

Because men, and post-menopausal women don’t lose blood every month, avoiding multivitamins with iron is generally recommended. Suspected anemia in older adults should prompt, not automatic supplementation, but an investigation into a source of inflammation or internal bleeding. Anemias are sometimes accompanied by iron-loading.

Some critics also believe that too many iron-fortified items in the food supply is causing more harm than good. Consumers of these foods could be receiving too big an overall dose.

Getting too much iron over time can cause organ damage.

I hope that helps!

Why does dried fruit (pineapple, cranberries) not have the same nutrition (vitamins C and A) as unprocessed?

I bought a bag of dried pineapple and it lists Vitamins C and A as 0%. Whole pineapple is full of the stuff. There’s no sugar, and citric acid is listed as the only other ingredient.

Cooking fruits and vegetables deteriorates their nutritional content. Drying is a form of cooking.

Also, some dried fruits are first processed to remove their juices for sale elsewhere, and a lot of the nutrients are drained with the juice.

Can you add fish oil, from fish oil vitamins, to your cat’s food for extra nutrition?

I have a 20 year old Persian and 2 other cats. I just thought of it the other day and squeezed a little fish oil in their food. I poked one of my capsules and squeezed it into their food and stirred. I thought the extra vitamins and other benefits of fish oil may help with my elderly Persian. The cats seem to love it, but I thought I’d ask anyone with experience if this is a good idea. I’ve done it twice, but would like to know if it is OK to add to food.

I appreciate your help and advice.

Thank you!

It is a good idea, but it would be better to get an oil meant for cats. That’s just because the human stuff may contain additional ingredients that cats shouldn’t have, or shouldn’t get too much of.

Here’s my general advice on fish oil:

Fish oil:
Only Natural Pet Icelandic Salmon Oil (pump) (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Only-Natural-Pet-Pure-Icelandic-Salmon…)

Good for hairballs, good for skin and coat.

Selection: You typically won’t use human fish oils – at least not the ones in liquid form – because they have added citrus flavors to many of them. You don’t want to use cod liver oil – at least not on a very regular basis – because it has too much vitamin a. Plain old fish oil or salmon oil is best. I prefer it in liquid form as opposed to capsules for ease of dispensing. You want it to say that they’ve done everything possible to remove mercury. I prefer one with the fewest additives, especially not rosemary. Or propyllgallate.

For ease of use, I prefer to buy it in liquid form in a squeeze bottle or pump.

Dosage: I give a squirt every day. It’s not measured but probably comes to somewhere around 1/4 tsp.

Where can I find a comprehensive nutrition chart (protein, carbs, fat, vitamins, etc)?

I’d like to find a comprehensive nutrition chart for lots of your basic foods at home. Something with the basics – protein, carbs, fat – but also more detailed with vitamins, calcium, iron, etc. Also something that explains what items are good for what (i.e. carbs are good for short term energy but breakdown into fat eventually) would be extremely helpful too!

Do nutrition labels list all the vitamins and minerals contained in the food?

I ask because I read that certain foods are good sources of a particular nutrient, yet sometimes that’s not reflected in the label. I realize that some foods lose nutrients through processing, but do companies only list certain "key" nutrients?

I think its against the law to mislabel food labels in terms of nutritional content. I’m likely more to believe the nutritional content label than what i’ve read in magazines… So i guess to answer your question, if it says so on the nutritional content label then thats whats in it. hope this helped. :-)

What do grapes give you, in terms of nutrition and vitamins?

Why are they good for you? Thanks. *chomps on grapes*

1 cup (92g) of grapes provides you with 30% of manganese for the day, as well as the following daily percentages:
5% Vitamin C
5% Thiamin (Vitamin B1)
5% Potassium
5% Vitamin B6

I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but grapes are an excellent source of your daily fruit intake. In the UK, the recommended fruit and veggie intake for one day is five servings; however, the US Cancer Society is now saying that nine servings of fruit and veggies is more accurate and better at combating disease and keeping good health.

Kudos to you for eating healthy and wanting info about it!

Oregon's Wild Harvest Echinacea Goldenseal Vitamin C 90 ct
This combination of herbs and vitamin C provides nutritional support to the immune system, lungs and sinuses. Echinacea transitioned from folk herbalism in the late 1800′s and became one of the top selling herbs in several countries, due mostly to the support of modern research. Like echinacea, goldenseal has a long history of traditional use with many Native American tribes, and was also popular with early American herbalists. It was known as the king of the mucous membranes. Oregon Grape is frequently used by people during cold and flu season, as an alternative to goldenseal. To complete this formula, vitamin C has been added.
